Blazing Hoops in Bellflower
High school basketball nets are burning up in the Bellflower area this season with winning teams, undefeated league play and big rivalries.
While the boys' varsity team at Valley Christian is only 10-12 after a close lose recently to Kilpatrick, the girls are on a winning streak with 15 straight victories. After rolling over Brentwood, the Crusaders are now 16-4.
"I think we're going to go all the way," stated Megan Lovingier, VC co-captain. "We have a lot of potential, we have strong players, and every player contributes."
VC has the strongest girls program in the area, having defeated both Mayfair and Bellflower earlier this season. The Buccaneers are 5-15 after losing to the Monsoons (15-6).
St. John Boscoe doesn't have a girls program, but the boys' team is doing well with a 14-9 record. The best records in the area belong to the boys' teams at Bellflower and Mayfair. The Bucs and the Monsoons collided in a big rivalry game recently.
"Bellflower hasn't beaten us in a decade," said Arnie Hollis, a senior guard at Mayfair. "We came in 16-3, 5-0 in league; they were 16-4 and 5-0 in league, so it was a pretty big game. "
The Monsoons won 73-65 and are now in the driver's seat toward a league title, but if the high school teams in the Bellflower area keep burning up the courts, one is likely to blaze a trail beyond the league championship.
