Mission Statement
The mission of the Public Works Department is to effectively maintain, repair, improve and build the City’s physical assets as efficiently as possible; to protect and enrich the quality of life in the community through the care and maintenance of the City’s infrastructure and physical assets; and, to continually evaluate the physical condition of physical assets and infrastructure components and the methods used in their maintenance and repair to maximize the efficiency, cost effectiveness and quality of the products and services provided to the community.
Department Description
The Public Works Department is responsible for general management, operation and care of the infrastructure found in the City's right-of-way including streets, alleys, parking lots, bridges, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, traffic signals, traffic signage, street striping, legend painting, curb painting, sanitary sewer system, storm drain system, reclaimed and potable water systems for irrigation, street lights, street sweeping, graffiti removal, landscapes and tree trimming, right-of-way permits and inspections; general management operation and care of City facilities and properties including electrical, carpentry, plumbing, air conditioning & heating systems, painting, janitorial, phone system; the purchase, maintenance and repair of the City's vehicle fleet and equipment; review of development projects for public improvements, review of tentative and final subdivision maps for conformance with the Subdivision Map Act, review and approval of waste management plans; and, update of the 15-year capital improvement program and the implementation of its specific capital projects.

Administration Division
Administration includes 7 full-time employees and 2 part-time employees. Administration provides for the planning, direction and control of the operation of the Facilities and Streets Divisions. It also manages Public Works contracts.
Engineering
Engineering provides engineering design services, development and maintenance of maps and records, special assessment district administration and all other basic engineering inspections and services. The division is responsible for the approval and inspection of all public improvements-- both privately and publicly funded-- to confirm compliance with City and State standards through the development review process. It also maintains and updates the City's Geographic Information System (GIS).

Facilities Division
Facilities includes 13 full-time and 5 part-time positions. These emloyees are assigned to the City's 3 major parks (Caruthers, Simms and Thompson).
Streets Division
Streets includes 14 full-time and 8 part-time employees. These employees are assigned to the City's Right-of-Way, Paint & Signs, Streets and Lanscape crews.

Street Trees
The Public Works Department is responsible for preserving and protecting the community's urban forest and to promote the health and safety of City trees, from the time they are planted through maturity.
