The public is invited to attend the Bellflower Honors citizen recognition ceremony on November 17th at Simms Park Auditorium. A dozen community members will be honored for outstanding contributions to Bellflower. Awardees include Deirdre Reyes, BUSD Teacher of the Year; longtime resident Robin Snow, who helped raise $35,000 for the victims of Hurricane Katrina; Bob Prigmore, original organizer of the YMCA Golf Tournament; and Carrie Vander Zwaag, a VCHS Science teacher and her students; plus a 58-year Bellflower business, student volunteers and a local parish. The event is set for Thursday, November 17th at 6:00 p.m. at Simms Park Auditorium. Admission and parking are free. Details: (562) 804-1424 ext. 2278.

Brandon Scott Summers Outstanding Achievement By participating in Boy Scouts since elementary school, Brandon has learned to value the rewards of community service. After completing a series of community improvement projects and meeting all requirements of character and academics as a member of Boy Scout Troop 181 in Bellflower, he joins a select group of young men who have earned the special distinction. Brandon credits the support he receives from his parents as one of the major factors in his achievement. Download Hi-Res Photo 
Alondra Dental Group Outstanding Community Service Employees from the Alondra Dental Group in Bellflower, led by Dr. Gary Crockett and Dr. Hanna Toukatli, raised nearly $2,000 to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina. With support from the dentistry’s dozen or so staff members, the group collected donations and forwarded the funds to the local chapter of the American Red Cross to assist victims affected by the hurricanes. St. John Bosco High School Outstanding Community Service The committed team of students and community volunteers from St. John Bosco High School didn’t wait for an opportunity to help victims of Katrina, they created the opportunity with a belief that students should “live loud the Brave faith.” Led by teacher and campus minister Jesse Rodriguez, the volunteers collected and stored large quantities of food and essential supplies that were shipped to Louisiana and outlaying areas to assist victims. Hosanna Chapel of Bellflower Outstanding Community Service Hosanna Chapel called upon members of the local parish to help hurricane victims who needed it most. They discovered that a need existed to collect and deliver essential items without counting on outside agencies which were already overstretched. They worked with numerous local organizations, including volunteers at St. John Bosco High School, to store and deliver thousands of pounds of essentials to devastated areas of Louisiana and surrounding regions. Robin Snow Outstanding Community Service When Robin saw a need to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina, she made it her business to find a way to help. As Manager of Whites Funeral Home, she offered to designate her place of work as an official Red Cross collection site. She promoted the site and invited residents and businesses from throughout the region to donate. In less than two months, she raised more than $30,000 to directly benefit victims of the hurricanes. Admiral Pest Control Outstanding Community Service Business owners Jeff and Brian Jones carry on a proud business legacy in Bellflower that spans nearly six decades. They follow in the footsteps of their grandfather and father as owners of Admiral Pest Control. By placing customer service and employee satisfaction above company profits, and community loyalty and civic involvement above corporate strategy, they continue to thrive in their family owned and operated business, which began with a single truck in 1947. Carrie Vander Zwaag Outstanding Community Service A science teacher at Valley Christian Middle School, Carrie Vander Zwaag believes that learning is meant for a lifetime, a principle she works hard to instill in her students. This summer, Carrie traveled to the desserts of Mongolia as part of the Earthwatch training program for teachers. Despite battling 130-degree temperatures and severe dust storms she conducted research that brings a whole new world of learning to her students at Valley Christian Middle School.

Deirdre Reyes Outstanding Achievement A fourth-generation educator who knows the value of lifelong learning and the rewards that come with instilling that concept in her students, Deirdre has worked as a teacher for more than 20 years, the past 10 in the Bellflower Unified School District. By utilizing innovative learning techniques such as chants and pictorials, the native of Ireland seeks to boost student achievement by making learning fun. Gary and Kathy Dietz Outstanding Community Service The longtime “partners in theatre” and noted performance enthusiasts have been bringing quality entertainment to Bellflower for the past five years. In addition, they have been busy building a reputation as consummate professionals in the theater industry for decades. Their work is highly regarded, and the caliber of productions at the newly renovated Bellflower Theater has earned critical acclaim. They also coordinate the annual Youth Cultural Arts Foundation talent show. Download Hi-Res Photo 
Bob Prigmore Lifetime Community Achievement Often called the “Father of Bellflower,” Bob lived in the community since 1938, until recently retiring to the Leisure Time senior community in Seal Beach. Through the years, he remained active in a wide range of community service organizations. In 1976, he helped found the Los Cerritos YMCA golf tournament to raise funds for youth and family programs. This year, the tournament was named in his honor to mark 30 years of excellence. The event raised an all-time high $30,000 for YMCA programs. Download Hi-Res Photo 
Deputy Sal Rios Outstanding Community Service Sal has worked as an L.A. County Sheriff’s patrol deputy in Bellflower for the past year-and-a-half. He previously served as a Custody deputy. His commitment to the department, and his commitment to the community, led his co-workers and fellow officers to select this busy father of three as the 2005 City of Bellflower “Deputy of the Quarter.” He enjoys all forms of sports and hopes to eventually serve as a training deputy for the department. Dontia Haynes Posthumous Award of Achievement A tennis star at San Diego State University, Dontia brought significant recognition to Bellflower with his outstanding play on the court. He was born in Bellflower in 1982, though his family moved from the City in the early ‘90s. Tragically, he perished in a motorcycle accident in September. He will be remembered as a talented athlete, committed student, beloved son and brother, and genuine friend to all who knew him. Dontia’s family will accept a posthumous award of achievement on his behalf. Entertainment: 
Aysha At age 16, Aysha recently captured the hearts of audience members by winning the 2005 City of Bellflower Youth Cultural Arts Foundation annual talent show. Her smooth vocal quality and powerful range have made the popular high school cheerleader a talent on the rise.  4 of a Kind With the recent release of their first and self-titled CD, followed by a European tour, the band has gained wide attention as up-and-coming stars. The group recently performed at the BET Music Awards and earned critical acclaim for their electrifying appearance at the MTV Awards.
