Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

To protect your health, protect the environment and comply with the law, household hazardous waste, e-waste and u-waste must be disposed of correctly. The health and safety of our families, neighborhoods and environment is threatened when household hazardous waste is stored or disposed of improperly. In California, it is illegal to dispose of household hazardous waste in the trash, down the drain or by abandonment. Household hazardous waste needs to be disposed of through an appropriate household hazardous waste collection program.

Household Hazardous Waste

Household hazardous waste or "HHW" consists of leftover household products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable or reactive ingredients. HHW includes, but is not limited to, brake fluid, paint, paint thinner, turpentine, cleaners with acid or lye, pesticides or herbicides, car batteries, pool chemicals, motor oil, oil filters, e-waste and u-waste.

E-Waste

The term "e-waste" is applied to consumer electronic equipment that is no longer wanted. Since electronics may contain lead, copper, and other heavy metals or potentially toxic substances, it is critical that any e-waste be disposed of properly. You can reduce e-waste by buying only what you need, reuse electronics that still work, and recycle electronics at the end of their useful lifecycle. E-waste includes computer monitors, television sets, TV/VCR combos, computers, mice, keyboards, printers, scanners, cell phones, radios, alarm clocks, microwaves, hair dryers, etc.

U-Waste

U-waste is universal waste. U-waste includes common household batteries, fluorescent tubes and bulbs and other mercury-containing lamps and devices.
