IRS Identifies Five Easy Ways to Spot Suspicious Calls

IF YOU GET A SUSPICIOUS CALL

  • Do not give out any information and hang up immediately.
  • Search the web for telephone numbers that scammers leave in your voice mail asking you to call back.
  • Contact the U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration to report the call. Use the agency's IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting web page at treasury.gov/tigta or call 800-366-4484.
  • Report the call to the Federal Trade Commission. Use the FTC Complaint Assistant on FTC.gov. Add "IRS Telephone Scam" in the notes.
  • If you think you owe taxes, call the IRS directly at 800-829-1040
